'We have stayed at Whilton Marina over the past 4 months during lockdown and I can honestly say the staff are just brilliant, helpful, professional and friendly. We have bought boats from them and they have helped us all the way they were brilliant and if we had any questions they were answered i recommend if wanting to buy a boat then go to Whilton Marina.The community are fantastic and we have made some wonderful friends for life. Also the chandlery sell everything you need for your boat and the staff are great next door is a cafe where they sell various food and drinks. We left Whilton yesterday to explore and start a journey but we would definitely return to Whilton Marina.

"If you are looking to buy a narrowboat - buy it from Whilton Marina! Rob has been fantastic throughout the whole process and exactly who you want to buy your first boat from. They have been honest, friendly and not all pushy. Any questions we had were answered very promptly. Thank you! The boat had been surveyed and blacked a few weeks before at the marina - two things you usually have to pay for and arrange at your own expense with a private purchase. The chandlery on site were also very helpful- making sure we had all the right kit and fuel before setting off (as well as the fridge well stocked with beer) We had a beautiful trip down taking the boat back to the smoke - it took 7 days but we were starting at 8am and finishing at 6pm without stopping for breaks. In hindsight, allowing 10-12 days would have been a bit more relaxing. The Grand Union Canal and the Midlands is beautiful and I never knew it existed. "Whilton Marina an unbelievable experience. I was not back in the UK yet so I subscribed to a few marinas in the hope of finding a boat and immediately I was impressed by the variety and selection of boats at Whilton Marina. On arriving back in the UK, I decided to go and take a look as their policy is to allow you to take three keys and to go and look at the boats on your own. No sales pressure of someone walking around with you, yet after looking around they were available to ask each and every question that I had and I also appreciated their unbiased advice. I felt very welcome from my first meeting with Whilton Marina and being a complete “newbie”, I was able to ask and get answered all the questions that I had prepared. My first 3 viewings were not exactly what I was looking for but I was advised to go and take a look at another boat who they had known from new, so after a complimentary coffee and a bacon sandwich at their cafe (very nice!), I went to see the boat and within minutes I had decided it was the boat for me. When we found out that by buying our boat through them meant any work that needed to be completed to make it insurable would be covered by them at no extra cost, this made us feel confident to know our purchase would be safe.
They ended up rewiring the boat for us and carried out lots of other works including organising with the gas man to catch up with us so that we could get going with our journey back to London.

The chandlery is well stocked with little bits you might need to keep your boat in good running order & has staff that are not only helpful but practical and have a real good knowledge of the canal & narrow boats. in the sales office all the boats for sale are well documented & staff are knowledgeable & helpful. There are lots of boats of all shapes and sized for sale and enough selection to fit any ones pocket. From a reasonably cheap doer upper to a top of the range. You name it, they'v got it. There plenty of parking (free) and there is also a public toilet'

'Now that everything is final we thought it was high time we did a write up on all the wonderful people who helped us on the journey to buying our boat.

The Three Angels That Made our Narrow Home Possible (Kind of)

So throughout our posts we let you know we were buying our boat through a Brokerage. That brokerage was Whilton Marina, and honestly they were great. The first time we went they allowed us to take the keys to of many of the boats as we wanted, which paid dividends in helping us to determine what we did and didn’t want. When our lovely Narrow Home found us Jon (Disclaimer: Despite being an Angel he does not resemble any of the above) at Whilton couldn’t do enough to make our dream a reality.

The process with them was super simple, even though we brought through finance which does make things slightly more complex. When we expressed an interest in our boat they talked us through everything.

So as we were looking to buy through finance the first step was to secure our loan in principle, to ensure that, should the mighty boat buying gods be with us, we would be able to complete. Keep your eyes peeled for Charlie’s Angel 2!

Once this is in place the offering process started and James got his best wheeler dealer on.

Woohoo offer accepted now time to  place the deposit.

Now we would like to delve a bit more into this deposit malarkey. Obviously being the sensible grown ups that we are, we did a bit of research into Whilton before going any further with the purchase. Like all mature adults we took to Facebook and looked at their reviews. It seemed a lot of these reviews focused on the deposit negatively, alarm bells right? Well no not really. Of course we can only go on our experience here but the Deposit secures the boat for you, if you then decide to pull out cause actually you can’t stand the colour of the walls then you loose that. Basically if you pull out for any reason, other than a problem in the safety or insurance of the vessel you loose your money. At no time was this not made clear to us. That’s how a deposit should work, in our eyes from the minute that deposit hit their bank account no other living soul was allowed to view our boat with a view to buy her, if we had then decided to pull out, the brokerage and the vendor would have missed all that potential foot fall for the boat and the selling process is only lengthened. As such this seemed completely fair and knowing that we had found our one we proceeded. Back to the step by step guide…

Arranging your boat survey, we quickly found who we wanted to use for our survey. Handily Whilton provide you with a list of companies they regularly use. This was booked in for the following week, easy peasy.

A couple of very minor items came up on the survey which affected the issuing of the boat safety certificate … cue Angel 1 (Jon) … Whilton then went back to the vendor to advise them of what had come up, and renegotiated the price to reflect the cost of the essential repairs. Meaning that you never pay more than the offer price that is accepted!

We then paid the remaining part of our deposit and got our insurance in place.

Completion of the final loan documents and then the balance was transferred to Whilton Marina.

Meaning we are now Narrow Home Owners! We still can’t quite believe it. So we are currently waiting on the few final repairs to be made, but the transfer has meant we have time to get aboard and prep for the move aboard.

Writing the steps down like that makes what was in total a 6 week process seem a breeze, which once you get round the paperwork and the realisation that in the canal world, everything proceeds at 4mph, it really is a simple process.

Whilton, and Jon, were truly fab, as buyers go I imagine we weren’t the most straight forward, and my worried nature meant a lot of double checking and undoubtedly daft questions. All of which was met with a smile and a feeling of not being able to do enough to help you.

So if you are interested in boats, want to buy a boat or even don’t want to buy a boat, go and see these guys they’ll sell you an awesome boat, and are super-all-questions-answered-heroes.Thank you Jon and Whilton!

Just a note of confidence in your sales system. You may remember that we bought from you (through you) back in November last year. Yesterday I looked on your boats for sale section and noticed that you recently sold Narrowboat Presque La, we looked at that boat last year when it was for sale via another sales organisation. Your advert for it was much more straight to the point and avoided all of the flowery bits regarding gadgets and gismo's like remote controlled steering and specialised hull paint with a 10 year guarantee. We had to book an appointment to go and see the boat in the marina where it was kept, also the guide appointed to accompany us during our viewing, was certainly not a salesman "quite the opposite"

Anyhow, at the time we felt that it was a bit overpriced for what it was, hence not going for it. But seeing it now on your site (and it couldn't have been for long) and sold, just goes to show that Whilton Marina have got the strategy right. We do have a gander around on the site from time to time, hence how we know that Presque La couldn't have been with you for long. "Good on yer , Team"

We recently bought Jentel Touch a 54ft trad stern from Whilton Marina.  The boat is now on a mooring at Cranfleet and we're almost reasy to live aboard!

We can't thank employees at Whilton Marina enough for all the help, kindness, and knowledge they shared with us.

Everyone in the marina was so helpful to us it was humbling and we began to already feel a warm welcome to the waterways thanks to you all.

We purchased a used boat through Whilton Marina in November last year. Since the sale went through, we suffered a couple of problems, firstly with a battery and then with the engine. We would like to say that we were extremely pleased with the service we received from the engineer, Mark, sent out from Whilton. On his first visit, he replaced a battery for us which corrected the problems we were having and he also provided us with a fair amount of advice and answers to queries that had caused us some consternation since the purchase as we were novices in the world of narrow boating. On his second visit, he spent a considerable amount of time (in very cold weather I might add) searching for the problem in connection with the engine. He returned to the marina to research the problem and returned to our boat in a couple of days with the answer that solved the problem. We found him to be very dedicated to his work and very helpful in his answers to our questions. We were most impressed with both his knowledge and his willingness to take the time to share this knowledge with us"

My son, Richard Kruller, has brought a boat from you - Steadfast - and yesterday we came to give it a clean, fill it with diesel and add a few basics.

Every one of the people we came into contact with at the marina greeted us with a smile, were pleasant and helpful.  It made a huge difference to the day.

But one person above all shone out: Keith from the workshop. We apologise for taking so much of his day, but we were extremely greatful for his sensible advice and practical help - all delivered cheerfully.  He made a massive difference, and I think his advice will continue to make a difference in the years ahead.

Steadfast is not a prestigious boat (though we're pleased with her), but it's very good to see that, no matter how much or little is spent on the boat, your after sales service is excellent.
